SUMMER STUDY IN MIRA, CUENCA, LA MANCHA, SPAIN.

Dates: June 28-August 1, 2017

The program will take place in the Spanish town of Mira, approximately three hours southeast of the Spanish capital of Madrid and one hour, twenty minutes northwest of the coastal city of Valencia. Mira is a town of 1,127 residents.  It will not be affiliated with any academic institution but rather constitutes an educational investment in a private cultural initiative, the Centro Dramático Rural [Rural Drama Center], begun in 2014 by acclaimed Madrid-based theater director, author, and educator Adolfo Simón and largely self-funded by Mr. Simón, with the active participation of a network of artistic colleagues who have embraced the concept of bringing culture to a rural community.

Students will reside is close quarters at the Centro Dramático Rural and will visit Valencia, Almagro, Cuenca, and Madrid.  The Center facilities, in an old residence in the middle of Mira, include a full library, theater space, and flexible classroom spaces, certainly adequate for five or six students.  Weekly instructional schedule will include three hours a day devoted to a seminar class on Spanish drama, plus 20 hours per week of internship/practicum to receive three hours of credit.  The internship responsibilities will involve supporting the outreach project of the Centro (see http://centrodramaticorural.es/) through the creation of a theatrical piece that students can expect to perform in Spain and later (fall of 2018, during the first New Harmony Conference on Contemporary Spanish Theater) in Indiana.

Estimated total program costs: $5,300 (includes program costs, tuition, lodging, meals, all transportation).  Scholarship may be available to qualified candidates.

Application deposit of $150 due February 16, 2017.  For more information, write or call Dr. David Hitchcock: dhitchcoc@usi.edu, 812-461-5380
